Recovery Reading 07/02/24: Getting Out of the Way

Sometimes it’s better for me to yield

I’m pretty headstrong. So is my “dry alcoholic” brother. We are also both opinionated, but I’ve finally learned that sometimes it’s best to realize that he’s going down a different path than I am and step back to avoid a collision in the form of an argument. It’s difficult for me to just let go when we’re both ornery, but I’m the one more likely to do it, so I “let it begin with me.” As I’ve heard it said at Al-Anon meetings, “Do I want to be right, or do I want to be happy.” I can also employ the slogan, “How important is it.” In a contest between being right or being happy, I try to choose happiness at least most of the time!

Today’s reminder

Since coming to Al-Anon, I’ve learned how to keep myself safe from chaos and inner turmoil in different ways. One of these days is favoring serenity over arguing a point.

“I am responsible for taking the actions necessary to keep myself safe. — Courage to Change

When I am focusing on other people and situations, what’s one thing I can do to redirect my focus?
