I forgot this sentence confusing. "Very" is an adverb and "damn" is a verb. One really cannot replace one with the other. The correct interpretation of this saying is:

Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very;' your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.
