Have Been Affected by Someone’s Drinking?
Take this test to find out
Why am I offering you this test below? Because you may be wondering if you’ve been affected by a parent’s or grandparent’s drinking. Typical problems for an adult child of an alcoholic (ACOA)/grandchild of an alcoholic (AGOA) include any or all of the following: consistently forming and/or staying in dysfunctional relationships, fearing the opposite sex, feeling anxious around authority figures, avoiding confrontation, self-sabotage and/or self-harm, trust and abandonment issues, fear of intimacy, poor coping skills, and perpetual impulsive behavior leading to self-loathing and confusion. The list goes on and on.
In Al-Anon and Alateen, they say that “awareness + action = change.” Taking this test may be your first step into the awareness that you’re an ACOA. Or maybe you aren’t. But if you are, the answer to this test may be the groundwork on which you can build a happier, saner life. You might be able to stop being the glue that holds the crazy together, wherever that might be or look like for you. The test and the score key follow below.
This screening test below was developed by two social workers, J. W. Jones and J. M. Pilat, based on The CAST-6: Development of a Short-Form of the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test.
